Your brain isn't concerned with making you happy, rich or successful.
I know, this tends to catch a lot of people off guard, but here’s the deal...
As humans, our brain's priority is to keep us alive, safe and comfortable.
This means that anytime we have to step outside of our comfort zone, alarm bells go off in our head because doing anything new is perceived as a threat.
This is a problem because the things that bring us the most happiness, joy and success often require us to step outside of our comfort zone, face a fear and do something new.
And so this natural resistance to change is what keeps us stuck in cycles.
You can tell that you've been stuck in a cycle if there's a goal you've been trying to achieve for a few months (or even years), but for some reason, haven't been able to accomplish it.
Even though you know what to do and, in most cases, how to do it, you don't.
You may procrastinate, over prepare, overanalyze, wait for the stars to align, futilely aim for perfection, or overcomplicate a simple process.
And when you do eventually take action and begin seeing progress, you reward yourself with a break… a really long break.
Instead of riding the wave of momentum you've created and taking the next step forward, you somehow find yourself taking two steps back.
What I just described is called the change cycle, and we've all found ourselves here, once or twice (or twenty times) before.
There are six stages of the change cycle, but we're not going to cover that in this post.
Instead, I want to share 3 tips to help you break through this cycle and overcome your fear response so that you can do what needs to be done and achieve that goal you've been working on for so long.
How to Break Through the Cycle and Get Unstuck
1. The first step is to identify which area of your life has been affected by this cycle. You can do this by asking yourself:
Where do I feel like you've been running in circles?
What goal have I been working towards, but for some reason haven't been able to achieve?
2. The second step is to identify how staying stuck is working for you. Here's the thing, with success comes change, and with change comes loss. Yes, you'll be gaining something new from achieving your goal, but you'll also have to give something up. You can ask yourself:
What do I lose by achieving my goal? What do I have to give up?
Am I truly willing to give this up in exchange for my goal?
3. The third step is to identify the personal fear holding you back- this could be a fear of rejection, failure, embarrassment, being found out, of gaining something just to lose it etc.
Once you've gained this awareness of the specific fear holding you back, you're then going to want to create a personal plan to work through that fear.
While this isn't something that I can talk through in a video because different fears require different plans of action,
Identifying and overcoming the fears holding you back is something that we cover in week 3 of the Best Life Blueprint.
