How to Reframe Your Identity
In the last post we talked about the importance of setting identity goals and how
Your outcomes (what you have) are a reflection of your habits (what you do)
And your habits are determined by your identity (who you are being).
We also talked about how skipping the step of identifying who you have to become and embodying that person can cause you to take unaligned action. This is a problem because
If what we do, does not match who we are, we feel like we’re faking it
And it’s from faking it that issues such as imposter syndrome, procrastination and other self-sabotaging behaviours arise.
(if you missed this post, you can catch up here)
To pick up where we left off, let’s talk about two simple steps that you can take to reframe your identity,
so you can take aligned action that allows you to get more done with less struggle.
Step One: Clarity
The first step is to clearly define who that next-level version of yourself is.
I highly recommend journaling for this step and have provided a few reflection questions that you may find useful.
What do I want?
Who do I have to become to achieve this goal? (answer in 1-3 words)
What does this mean to me? *What are the qualities of this person? (list 4-7)
Which of these qualities do I already have?
Which of these qualities do I need to work on?
How can I embody these qualities today?
How does this next-level version of myself show up in daily life?
What am I no longer available for?
Step Two: Rewrite Your Story
We have a running narrative that we use to give meaning to past experiences, explain how the world works, and define who we are.
The stories we tell ourselves are directly related to the identities we adopt.
So to reframe our identity, we need to rewrite our stories.
But more on that next week.
Working on step one is more than enough to make a powerful identity shift.
