How to Get Unstuck & Break Free From Your Rut

I remember the feeling of being stuck like it was yesterday.

☞ After fighting the alarm clock for at least 30 minutes every morning, I would have to drag myself out of bed. And the only thing I looked forward to was getting back to bed and watching an episode of the Real Housewives of whatever city was playing that day.

☞ I remember Tuesdays feeling like Thursdays, and Thursdays feeling like Sundays. All of my days blurred together.


☞ I also remember being low-key impressed with how much I was able to do in a day without ever having to think about it.

My life became so routine, that I kicked into autopilot and began going through the daily motions without much thought or effort. I’d somehow show up where I needed to be and do what I needed to do mindlessly. Then I’d go to bed and start it all over the next day.

I was stuck in a rut. And here are 5 signs that you may be stuck too.







Signs that You’re Stuck in a Rut

  1. Your days begin blurring together

  2. You think of the "good old days” a lot, and feel like your best and most fun years are behind you.

  3. You’re really comfortable. So comfortable, that you no longer have to think about what you do anymore. You go through the daily motions on auto-pilot.

  4. Life has become boring.

  5. Life has become one big to-do list. And even though you check items off this list daily, you somehow still don’t feel like you’re doing much.


Here’s Why You’re Stuck


I’ve covered this topic a lot as a coach. And if I wanted to, I could throw out a list of about 20 different reasons why you’re stuck, according to what research says.

But the more I study this, the more transparent it becomes to me.

At the end of the day, there are only 2 reasons why people become stuck.

  1. A lack of progress and/or

  2. A lack of passion in your life.

That’s all it boils down to.



Here’s What a Lack of Passion Looks Like

If you’re missing passion in your life it means that there’s nothing lighting you up.

There’s no fire under your feet and you’re missing that drive and excitement that makes life fun.


You may begin feeling a sense of emptiness which forms in the void of passion.

You begin to simply go through the motions as your days begin to blur together and soon, you find yourself feeling stuck.


Here’s What a Lack of Progress Looks lIke

If you’re lacking progress in your life, this simply means that you are not growing.

More specifically, it means that you’re not taking control of your personal development.


You’re in the passenger’s seat of your personal growth and instead of creating your life- life is happening to you.


You’ve had a hard time achieving your goals, end up feeling unfulfilled when you do achieve them, or haven’t set any goals to begin with.

Regards of the reason why (either a lack of passion or a lack of progress in your life), one thing is crystal clear.

If you’re feeling stuck- it is a blaring signal that it is time to make a change.





The One Thing That Helped Me to Move Forward | The Key to Getting Unstuck


The single most important thing that I did to get unstuck was to think small.

I took baby steps and counted every tiny step I took as progress.


Why?

Because big plans to make drastic changes in our daily routine is intimidating and feels like an uphill battle.

In an effort to stay comfortable and avoid the mountain of changes ahead of us, we often talk ourselves out of taking action and stay stuck in place as we avoid stepping too far out of our comfort zones.

The key is to take small, consistent and sustainable steps that gradually shakes things up in your life.





How to Get Unstuck | Three Steps

  1. Start a Passion Project The key here is to start small. a. Pick one thing that you love doing. This should be something that lights you up and causes you to lose track of time when you get into it. It should also be something that you haven’t done in a while. A long lost passion of yours. b. Next, "Follow Your Bliss”. Start doing this passion activity 1-3 times per week for at least 30 minutes. As each month goes by, add something on to this routine.

  2. Take Charge of Your Personal Growth Journey The easiest way to do this is to set more meaningful goals. The aim here is to start the process of intentional growth in an area of your life that matters to you. As you set these goals make sure that they are both inspiring to you and achievable.

3. Get in Alignment with the Things that Matter Most to You a. Make a list of the 5 most important things to you in your career, relationships, health, spirituality, home, and recreational life. (The items on your list are your values.) b. Once you have that list written down, examine how present each value is in the 6 areas of your life. c. If there’s an area of your life that doesn’t reflect your values, decide what needs to be changed to get that life area more aligned with what matters to you.

In summary, the three steps to getting unstuck are to:

a. Infuse your life with more passion. b. Set meaningful long and short term goals to take charge of your personal growth and to take control of the direction of your life. c. And finally, get in alignment with your values. Discover the things that are most important to you and make sure that they are present in your life.
