A Beginner's Guide to Self-Care: 3 Simple Ways to Kickstart Your Self-Care Routine

How have you taken care of yourself over the past 7 days?

I have to admit, I’ve been guilty of going days (and sometimes weeks) without taking a moment to slow down and just breathe. I would work myself into a mental fog and only paused when I realized that my exhaustion made me ineffective at my job.

At some point, this system stopped working for me.

  • I had to learn that while determination and discipline was necessary to move my business forward, no prize was worth my happiness and mental health.

  • I had to re-discover that there was more to life than my next goal.

  • I had to start taking care of myself in order to protect my mental health and overall wellbeing. More specifically, I had to start practicing self-care.

Self-care = anything you do to nurture your wellbeing, happiness, or health.

Here are 3 simple things you can start doing today to kickstart your self care routine.

1. Learn something new

Spend 20 minutes a day on that skill you’ve been itching to learn. In addition to infusing passion into your life, learning something new fights against boredom and helps prevent you from falling into a rut.

2. Clean up your night time routine Design a night time routine that you genuinely enjoy doing.

Dedicate the hour before going to bed to unwinding, relaxing, and recharging for the next day. A sneak peak into my personal routine:

  • A 15 minute foot massage as I watch an episode of the Good Wife

  • Taking a hot shower

  • Choosing my outfit for the next day

  • Cleaning up (because nothing ruins a morning like waking up to a dirty room and walking over to a kitchen full of greasy dishes #amIright?)

3. Journal daily

Journaling helps you identify and release negative emotions that you’ve been carrying around and allows you to relive positive moments that happened throughout your day. This is one way that I get to work through my emotions and clarify my thoughts without any fear of being judged.

Including these 3 activities into your daily routine works because self care is best done in small and regular doses. It’s better to do little acts of self care throughout your day than to limit yourself to a single grand activity once a month.

Don’t wait until you're on the verge of burning out to begin taking care of yourself.

In addition to feeling more energized, happier, and less stressed, self care is key to living a more balanced life.
